2024 SeaPerch Competition

Neptune, NJ — In a poolside display of submerged technology and topside teamwork, the U.S. Navy's SeaPerch Program and school students from around the region joined Scuba.Tech Incorporated at the Neptune Aquatic Center on April 13th for an underwater robotics competition. The venue buzzed with excitement as approximately 600 student participants, 45 US Navy personnel, and six Scuba.Tech underwater explorers gathered to push the boundaries of marine exploration in friendly competition.

Students showcased their ingenuity and teamwork by navigating homemade ROVs, crafted from kits, 3D printers, and craft components, through intricate obstacle and mission courses. These custom-built ROVs tested their design skills and problem-solving abilities, reflecting the spirit of innovation that the SeaPerch Program aims to cultivate and that the US Navy demonstrates every day.

Amidst the excitement, Scuba.Tech elevated the experience by granting ten volunteer students the opportunity to command scout-class exploration ROVs complete with UHD cameras, lighting, and manipulator arms. This special segment allowed participants to handle more sophisticated technology, comparing and contrasting it with their own creations. Guided by the Scuba.Tech Explorers, these students maneuvered the advanced ROVs around the pool environment, demonstrating their skills to an audience of peers and global viewers via livestreams on Discord and Twitch.

The event highlighted the educational potential of such immersive experiences. Participants not only tackled real-world teamwork challenges but also deepened their understanding of underwater robotics. By blending competition with education, Scuba.Tech and the SeaPerch Program illuminated the importance of teamwork and technological proficiency in navigating the future of marine exploration.

All of the volunteers at the event demonstrated their commitment to the next-generation of underwater technologists. Combining this commitment with the US Navy’s mission and the passionate students; SeaPerch continues to inspire and prepare a new generation of engineers and explorers!

Available Presentations and Workshops for 2024

PRESENTATIONS

TOPIC: Photogrammetric workflows and impacts, expedition planning, working with ~400BC artifacts & amphorae, conservation and preservation, remote decompression operations —  1.5 hr
TOPIC: ROV drone operations with dive teams on shipwrecks, ROV dive planning, ROV selection, ROV survey augmentation, accessibility and crewing, broadcast —  1 hr
TOPIC: Steller sea lions, PNW wildlife and interactions, travel and diving considerations —  45 min

WORKSHOP

In this workshop, we will take your class on an outdoor diving adventure, showcasing the latest in ROV construction, operations, imaging, and hybrid-diver operations. This program is completely custom to your class size and needs, so inquire for a bespoke plan. We will assist with all permitting and site planning, or we can join as a special guest with your existing event! Runtime ranges: ~ 3 hrs to 9 hrs
Ready to take your shipwreck diving and survey skills to the next level, or curious about art in rapid digital survey? Starting from the ground-up, we will review current survey techniques before introducing photogrammetric survey.  With little more than a camera, an accurate baseline, the right software, and know-how, you can build scaled-3D models in just minutes after your dive!  This technique has revolutionized land-based archaeology and is now being implemented underwater.  All required software will be supplied, and we will go step-by-step through the entire workflow to create your first model. Handouts with notes will be provided, so you can focus on the task-at-hand…and have a convenient reference guide for the future!  ~ 4 hrs
Optional Extension:  All of the above, plus 2 hours of equipment setup, a 2-hour pool session, and 2 hours of modeling the results. Students will leave with 2+ 3D models, fully-configured software, and the diving and photography skills to begin real survey projects.  ~ 10 hrs
